When the box turns green, click as fast as you can. Don't click early - that's a false start.

How to improve your reaction time

01

Get enough sleep

Reaction time is one of the first things to suffer from sleep deprivation. A well-rested brain responds measurably faster.

02

Stay hydrated

Even mild dehydration slows cognitive response. Water first, test second.

03

Use a wired mouse

Wireless input adds 1-4ms of latency on average. A wired mouse on a high-polling-rate pad is the fastest setup.

04

Eliminate distractions

Close other tabs. Turn off notifications. Full-screen the test for the best focus.

05

Practice consistently

Reaction time improves with deliberate practice. Test daily for a week and you'll see your average drop.

06

Use a fast monitor

144Hz+ reduces input lag from the display side. The lower the total pipeline latency, the faster your clicks register.

What's a good reaction time score?

Under 200msElite - very rare, likely pro gamer / athlete
200-250msFast - trained or naturally quick
250-320msAverage - typical for an untrained adult
Over 320msSlower than average - might be tired or distracted

The 250ms average comes from published research across large samples. Individual variation is wide - your best score will be 30-50ms better than your average.

FAQ

How is my reaction time measured?
The time between the box turning green and your click, measured in milliseconds using the browser's high-resolution performance.now() API. We take 5 trials and report the average.
What happens if I click too early?
That trial is void. The box turns yellow and you click to retry. Your final average only includes valid trials.
Is my score saved?
Yes - your best (lowest) average is saved in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I share my score?
Yes. After the test, click 'Share your score' to post a 1200x630 image to Twitter or your device's share menu.
Why is my score different each time?
Reaction time varies based on focus, fatigue, time of day, and random factors. The 5-trial average smooths this out. Your best score is the meaningful number.
